“On the nose: Really clean and fresh. Red apple juice, heather honey, a light touch of caramel. Orange zest and copper pennies. Very nicely married with the spirit – nothing harsh whatsoever.

In the mouth: Pristine again, and what this has that pommeau often tends not to is a lovely fresh brightness of acidity that just pierces the sweetness and lifts everything up. Apple and golden raisin. Mango slices and Dundee cake. Just such a drinkable and fresh take on this style and again the weighting of juice and spirit is delightful.”

“It pours a bright, burnished bronze and whilst still a little swirl reveals some pronounced ‘legs’. The aroma is sweet and aged, toffee apple and Christmas cake, but at the same time the acid in the Kingston Black juice lifts everything to give the impression of a light, freshness. In the mouth it is more of the same, the spices and sultanas from the Christmas cake almost seem to evaporate off the surface of the liquid and fill your nose from within. There’s no harshness or alcoholic note, just velvety, sweet goodness.”

In 2007, enroute to South Africa, the MSC Napoli was beached off Devon. Its cargo included new, empty Allier oak barrels destined for The Cape’s finest vineyards. Some of the shipwrecked barrels found their way to us, having been protected from the sea by being packed among bibles written in Zulu. Maturing our brandy in these barrels gives a sophisticated finish worthy of single cask bottling. We now buy new barrels from the same cooperage. The finely grained new Allier oak is what creates the distinctive smoked, oaky taste of Shipwreck.

It smells fruity but with smoke and oak and toasted apples and hints of mahogany. A smoky, sophisticated and distinctively oaky finish.

It smells bold, full of apples, vanilla and spice. It tastes fruity with walnut, coffee and oak notes and prunes, vanilla and spice and sherry wood. It feels smooth and full with a gentle astringency.

Complex with a Christmas pudding richness, full of subtle bouquets and aromas.

The nose is fruity, sweet and floral, like spring in the orchards. There is honeysuckle, apple blossom and hawthorn. The taste is full of apple, with delicate white flowers and a clean lingering fruit finish.

This brandy has gained depth, smoothness and stature.  With its complexity, velvety palate and intriguing spicy aftertaste it is a candidate for after dinner.

“On the nose: Deeper, richer, spicier. Very spicy actually, oak and nutmeg and clove. Moved from the Dundee Cake of the Kingston Black Aperitif to a brandy-soaked Christmas pudding. Oloroso sherry. Polished furniture. All with a beating heart of stewed apple. Fans of Glendronach, step this way.

In the mouth: Again, it’s deep, it’s rich, it’s rounded, it’s spicy. Very sweet, but balanced by tannin and oak. Less acidity than the Kingston Black Apple Aperitif, but again there’s more than you find in most pommeaux, which is all to the good. Char and raisin and cinnamon and nutmeg. In pudding terms it’s Halloween’s toffee apple meeting Christmas’s fruitcake. A decadent end-of-evening treat.”

XO has been aged in small oak barrels and each bottle can be traced back to it's source orchard. It starts with a fruity, applely nose which leads into an elegant aromatic palate with notes of vanilla, followed by a long spicy, oak finish.
