Despite the introduction of modern-day technology, Ships and Submarines of the Royal Navy still operate on the basis of main broadcast announcements, known in the Royal Navy as Pipes. Before the introduction of main broadcasts, a Crew (or Ship's Company) would be alerted to forthcoming ship's activity either using a Bosun's Call (which is a small pipe or whistle) or a Bugle. Whilst those methods are still in place, and still used, a Pipe is now the term for any verbal announcement made over a ship's main broadcast in the Royal Navy.

This book aims to translate their meanings, not simply to make the seemingly incomprehensible understandable, but also to conjure up often humorous anecdotes that provide an insight into life at sea in the RN. Each Pipe is provided with a brief description of its meaning followed by longer observation of what it meant to different members of the Ship's Company.

For its short service life the Hornet wore a number of very different colour schemes. Three are featured in this kit. Our primary source of inspiration was the very good Buttler, Collins and Derry Hornet book on the aircraft and we backed this up with research in a number of other publications and in discussion with our subject matter experts.

The de Havilland DH.103 Hornet was conceived in 1941 as a high-speed, long-range fighter tailored for operations in the Pacific Theatre. With the Mosquito entering full-rate production and jet development underway, de Havilland had design capacity to pursue a private venture. Initial concepts (DH.101 and DH.102) explored Sabre and Griffon engines, but by late 1942, the company settled on a twin Merlin-powered design—compact fast and agile,

Design-wise, the Hornet was a masterclass in aerodynamic refinement. It retained the Mosquito’s wooden construction but introduced a slimmer fuselage, laminar flow wings, and tightly cowled Merlin 130/131 engines producing 2,070 hp each with propellor's rotating in opposite directions. These features enabled a blistering top speed of 485 mph at 22,000 feet, probably the fastest of any piston engine service aircraft, and superb handling. Armament included four 20mm Hispano cannons and provisions for rockets or bombs up to 1,000lb, making it a potent strike platform.

Though it missed World War II combat, the Hornet entered RAF service in 1946 and saw action during the Malayan Emergency. Operating from Singapore, Hornets conducted ground-attack missions and reconnaissance, proving their worth in tropical conditions. The Sea Hornet variant, adapted for carrier use and as an all-weather fighter, served with the Fleet Air Arm.

Captain Eric "Winkle” Brown, who holds the record for most number of aircraft types flown, rated the Hornet as his favourite and praised the its performance: "The Hornet was a pilot’s aeroplane par excellence. It had delightful handling characteristics and was incredibly fast for a piston-engined aircraft.” He further remarked, "Its acceleration was phenomenal, and it could out-turn most contemporary fighters with ease.”

Despite its brief service life, the Hornet represented the zenith of propeller-driven fighter design—an elegant, lethal machine that bridged the gap between wartime innovation and the jet age.

Hawker’s Naval Fighters: Camel to Sea Harrier by Christopher Budgen

In 1912, Tom Sopwith transitioned from running a flying school to manufacturing aircraft, leveraging his nautical interests to create designs purchased by Britain’s Royal Navy. The onset of the First World War solidified the Sopwith Aviation Company’s reputation with aircraft like the Sopwith Camel widely used onboard the ships of the day. After the war, cancellations of government orders forced Sopwith Aviation into liquidation, However, a new company, the HG Hawker Engineering Company, was quickly formed, having been named after Sopwith’s test pilot, Harry Hawker. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Hawker produced designs that continued to be purchased by the Royal Navy, being used on the early aircraft carriers as well as the larger vessels of the fleet. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the RN’s Fleet Air Arm found itself woefully unprepared for battle, having mainly biplanes and slow monoplanes with which to face the modern German fighters and bombers. As a temporary solution, Hawker adapted the Hurricane into the Sea Hurricane. Hawker later developed advanced piston-engine fighters like the Fury and its naval counterpart, the Sea Fury, which saw action during the Korean War and Suez Crisis in 1956. The Sea Fury was succeeded by Hawker’s first jet, the Sea Hawk, marking the Fleet Air Arm’s transition into the jet age. The Sea Hawk also served the Indian Navy during its conflicts with Pakistan. Hawker’s successful Hunter, although primarily for the RAF, was used by the Royal Navy for land-based operations. Meanwhile, Hawker’s next design, the ground breaking Harrier, was ordered as the Sea Harrier; it saw action during the Falklands War, and, in due course, in the conflict in the former Yugoslavia and in Iraq. From its earliest days then, the Hawker Aircraft Company has supplied winning designs to the Royal Navy and to many navies overseas, a feat that few other companies could match.

CHRISTOPHER BUDGEN, growing up in the shadow of Hawker’s Flight Test Centre at Dunsfold in Surrey, entered employment there in the 1970s, remaining through the company’s amalgamation into state-owned British Aerospace and privatised BAE Systems. During 21 years with BAe, Chris worked on Hunter and Hawk as well as many Harrier and Sea Harrier Projects. Chris’s previous books detailing Hawker history – Hawker’s Secret Cold War Airfield, Hawker’s Early Jets and Hawker's Secret Projects – are now followed by this work. As an archivist for many years at Brooklands Museum, and specializing in Hawker Aircraft Ltd and successor companies, Chris is well placed to bring to light the previously unrecorded detail of Hawker’s fascinating history.

HMS Victorious joined the Home Fleet on commissioning in May 1941 and just nine days later her pilots encountered and attacked the German battleship Bismarck. On 26 May 1941, the new carrier HMS Victorious whose aircrews, despite their inexperience, succeeded in putting a torpedo into the battleship's midship section, which opened up a fuel tank on the Bismarck. After the sinking of the Bismarck, HMS Victorious continued to operate with the Home Fleet. Victorious's Fairey Albacore aircraft were subsequently involved in an attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in March 1942. She provided cover for Russian convoys PQ-15 and PQ-17 in May and June 1942 respectively. She then participated in Operation Pedestal and then went on to take part in the North African landings at the end of 1942.

HMS Victorious sailed to Pearl Harbor to join USS Saratoga's Battle Group, Task Force 14. She arrived and took up duties under Task Force 14 in the the Southwest Pacific on 17th May 1943. She embarked US aircraft and aircrew, and with the Saratoga swept the Solomon Islands. During that year this busy ship supported the US Pacific fleet on many operations usually carrying both British and US Wildcat fighters. HMS Victorious covered Russian convoys from January-March 1944, then took part in Operation 'Tungsten' air strike against the German battleship Tirpitz on 3 April 1944. After another refit she joined the British Eastern Fleet enroute to the Far East.

In July 1944, she led a strike against Palembang with HMS Illustrious, then on 25th July she led a strike against the Andaman Islands with HMS Indomitable. In October 1944, she was assigned to the British Pacific Fleet, serving in some of the final hard-fought operations at the end of the war.

Fairey Swordfish W5856 first flew on 21st October 1941 and was built by Blackburn hence being known as a 'Blackfish'.

W5856 spent part of the war on active service in the Mediterranean.

The Fairey Swordfish earned legendary status during WWII, not just for actions like the Bismarck, Taranto and the Channel Dash, but also for the pivotal role it played in protecting Atlantic and Arctic convoys.

One of the most versatile aircraft of WWII, hence the affectionate name 'Stringbag', it could carry torpedoes, bombs, mines, depth charges, rockets and radar and was also used for reconnaissance, spotting the fall of shells and inserting secret operatives and equipment into Axis controlled territory.

This is also a rare opportunity to own the signature of John Welham who piloted a Swordfish into Taranto Harbour in the famous battle.

The de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk (or Chippie) is a tandem, two-seat, single-engine primary trainer aircraft designed and developed by de Havilland (Canada). It was developed shortly after WWII and sold in large numbers during the immediate post-war years, often used as a replacement for the de Havilland Tiger Moth biplane. Introduced in 1946 it was finally retired in the UK in 1996.

It was much loved by the generations of trainee pilots who cut their teeth on this very capable, reliable and pilot friendly aircraft.

This specific aircraft, WK608, beautifully rendered here by Joe Roberts, currently resides in the Navy Wings hangar. It is part of the Navy Wings 'tail dragger' training process and makes regular appearances at airshows around the UK.

A specialist variant of the Westland Sea King, the HC.4 was the Royal Navy's Commando troop carrying and resupply helicopter replacement for their Wessex HU.5 helicopters and a development of similar aircraft produced for the Egyptian and Qatari Air Forces. 42 newly built helicopters were eventually produced in this configuration, which by their nature, were never too far from any action hotspots.
