As a comprehensive study of every aircraft type ordered for the Royal Navy since 1908, this is something of a tour de force.

It includes fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, rigid and non-rigid airships, unmanned aircraft and pilotless target aircraft. It also includes many designs that were ordered but not built so that the importance placed on them by the Naval Staff or their potential impact on aircraft carrier design and operations can be explained.

Every type, even unsuccessful single prototypes, is described and the majority are illustrated by photographs, many of which come from the author’s own collection. The 50 most significant aircraft also have detailed 3-view drawings.

The book describes over 400 different types of aircraft built by over 100 different manufacturers to offer the most detailed coverage of Royal Navy aircraft ever produced.

Research for the book took over forty years and reference material included Admiralty Archives and an array of material in the public domain including manufacturer’s data, individual aircraft pilot’s notes and a wealth of published sources.

David Hobbs is uniquely well placed to write this book having served as a pilot in the RN for thirty-three years and retired with the rank of Commander. He flew both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft and his log book contains 2300 flying hours with 807 day and night deck landings. He served in seven British aircraft carriers, flew over 20 of the aircraft types described in this book and spent four years in the RN Director General (Aircraft) Department where he was closely involved with Sea Harrier carrier trials, introduced new visual landing aids for night recoveries and liaised with the US Navy on carrier operating techniques.

Formed in 1941 with a complement of Fulmars, 809 NAS and was involved in actions on the Russian convoys and the Mediterranean and later, flying Seafires, such operations as Pedestal, Avalanche, Torch and Dragoon before being deployed to engage in the recovery of Rangoon and British Malaya and Sumatra. 

After the war they transitioned to Sea Hornets and then Sea Venoms in time to be involved in the Suez Crisis.

Later they converted to Buccaneers (including for the British Honduras/Belize 'incident').  and then, ultimately, decommissioned in 1978. The Falklands War saw 809 briefly recommissioned to fly Sea Harriers to great effect. Decommissioned in December 1982, 809 is now, once again, an operational Naval Air Squadron flying the formidable F-35B.

Samuel Plimsoll, MP, is remembered for his safe load waterline mark, introduced to prevent unscrupulous shipping owners from overloading their ships and so taking excessive risks with the lives of their crews. It is now found on all commercial ships worldwide. This attractive whisky glass, handsomely etched with his image and the Plimsoll line, in this case used to mark the "safe load" for a generous helping of spirit.

The extraordinary BAe Sea Harrier FRS1 first entered service with the Royal Navy in April 1980. The aircraft is a naval VTOL/VSTOL jet fighter designed for reconnaissance and attack roles. In 1993 an improved variant of the Sea Harrier was produced as the FA.2 with a more powerful engine, improved air-to-air capabilities and weapons options. The FA.2 was produced until 1998 and continued in service until 2006 when it was replaced by the Harrier GR9. 56 FA.2 Sea Harriers were produced for the Royal Navy. These remarkable examples of innovative British engineering have served with honour in conflicts around the globe.

ZH804 was assigned to 800 Naval Air Squadron and bears the crossed swords and trident motif.

On May 1st, 1982, nine Sea Harriers from 800 Naval Air Squadron, attacked the airfield at Port Stanley. Then a Flight Lieutenant, David Morgan was the pilot of the last aircraft to attack and was forced to come in just above ground level to avoid the, by then fully alert, airfield defences.

Despite being hit by 20mm AA fire, he managed to escape by flying at less than 30 feet above the runway and returned safely to HMS Hermes.

Lt Cdr Morgan ended the conflict as the highest scoring pilot with four confirmed victories and was subsequently awarded the DSC.

This superb print by Darryl Legg captures the speed and danger of those moments as he completes his mission and hurtles along the runway to get clear of the danger zone.

Each print of the limited edition of 300 is individually signed by Lt Cdr David Morgan DSC.

The Lockheed F-35 is an advanced stealth fifth generation fighter combining speed and superb agility. There are three variants; F-35A, B and C. F-35B Lightning II ZM149 “015” (c/n BK-15) piloted by Sqn Ldr Will of the RAF No 207 Squadron from RAF Marham completed the first successful landing onboard HMS Prince of Wales on June 8, 2021. This was the inaugural landing of a fixed-wing aircraft on the Prince of Wales. The Prince of Wales is the second Royal Navy aircraft carrier and was conducting sea trials commencing on June 7, 2021. ZM149 will take part in the sea acceptance trials by testing the vessel’s ability to launch and recover aircraft
