During five years of research for the four volumes of the Fleet Air Arm Boys book series, (see below) covering the post-war FAA, former personnel not only contributed a huge quantity of stories but also sent many thousands of photographs, largely taken by themselves, and mostly never previously seen. It soon became clear that what was needed was a stand-alone photograph-heavy book, showing off many of these superb photos to best effect by giving them up to a full page or more with high quality reproduction.

Whereas the ‘Fleet Air Arm Boys’ books are all about fascinating stories supported by photos, here you have fascinating photos supported by some explanation and the occasional short story. The opportunity has also been taken to expand the coverage to cover the whole history from the start of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) before the First World War to today, illustrating the changing equipment and roles of the service.

Coverage is not limited to just a large representative group of aircraft, but also includes many ships and air stations. Most importantly, air and ground crew are highlighted throughout, both at work and at play, and those who lost their lives are suitably remembered.

Flying with the Navy is a once-in-a-lifetime publication and a must-have for all devotees of this truly astounding branch of the armed forces.

    Absolutely absorbing!

    Having all 4 volumes of Steve Bond's Fleet Air Arm Boys, I am thrilled that he and Heather have now brought out this "Coffee Table Book". I got my copy today and have been going through it all afternoon. Having served as a Wren Aircraft Mechanic, pre to us also going to sea, I recognised, and worked on, some of the aircraft. It is a delight to get more information, and images, of what the lads, and aircraft of the squadrons got up to when they all left us at RNAS Yeovilton, to join their ships! Packed with jaw-dropping photos from the earliest days of Naval air flying to the latest - this will make an amazing gift for yourself or others.

    A visual Flourish of Trumpets

    A triumphant finale. To follow the four superb volumes of “Fleet Air Arm Boys”, Steve and Heather Bond have concluded the project with, for want of a better expression, a visual flourish of trumpets.

    Photos, cartoons, illustrations and appropriate, but minimal, words spread across the pages in vastly greater numbers than the actual page count. As with the four books that preceded it, FWTN is filled with jewel-like fragments in corners amongst the major items. Within 24 hours I had sat down and savoured my copy slowly, twice……and I know I shall find more when I return to it. The content is utterly different, but the treatment is the same, perfect!

    Steve and Heather had to choose from more than 12,000 images, a daunting task. Some people will, inevitably, say “Yes, but why not the…..?” Of course there are omissions, but I amazed and delighted by the vast number of inclusions. And for those who wish to find and produce omissions, the ideal opportunity for display exists – the Facebook page “Fleet Air Arm Boys and Girls” grew from this overall project and is active daily.

    This five-book, six-year project is as good as one could possibly wish for.
