the Fairey Swordfish Mk.I W5856 and Mk.II LS326, both of which are situated in our hangar at the Navy Wings Heritage Centre. These models feature a length of 37cm and a wingspan of 46cm, at a scale of 1/27 from the actual aircraft.

The elegant Supermarine Seafire MkIIIC (880 Sqn HMS Implacable 1945) is 1/28 scale and has a wingspan of 48.3cm.

Formed in 1941 with a complement of Fulmars, 809 NAS and was involved in actions on the Russian convoys and the Mediterranean and later, flying Seafires, such operations as Pedestal, Avalanche, Torch and Dragoon before being deployed to engage in the recovery of Rangoon and British Malaya and Sumatra. 

After the war they transitioned to Sea Hornets and then Sea Venoms in time to be involved in the Suez Crisis.

Later they converted to Buccaneers (including for the British Honduras/Belize 'incident').  and then, ultimately, decommissioned in 1978. The Falklands War saw 809 briefly recommissioned to fly Sea Harriers to great effect. Decommissioned in December 1982, 809 is now, once again, an operational Naval Air Squadron flying the formidable F-35B.

Samuel Plimsoll, MP, is remembered for his safe load waterline mark, introduced to prevent unscrupulous shipping owners from overloading their ships and so taking excessive risks with the lives of their crews. It is now found on all commercial ships worldwide. This attractive whisky glass, handsomely etched with his image and the Plimsoll line, in this case used to mark the "safe load" for a generous helping of spirit.

For the first time, this book tells the story of how naval air operations evolved into a vital element of the Royal Navy’s ability to fight a three-dimensional war against both the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe. An integral part of RN, the Fleet Air Arm was not a large organisation, with only 406 pilots and 232 front-line aircraft available for operations in September 1939. Nevertheless, its impact far outweighed its numbers – it was an RN fighter that shot down the first enemy aircraft of the war, and an RN pilot was the first British fighter 'ace' with 5 or more kills. The Fleet Air Arm’s rollcall of achievements in northern waters went on to include the Norwegian Campaign, the crippling of Bismarck, the gallant sortie against Scharnhorst and Gneisenau as they passed through the Channel, air attacks on enemy E-boats in the narrow seas, air cover for the Russian convoys, air attacks that disabled Tirpitz, and strikes and minelaying operations against German shipping in the Norwegian littoral that continued until May 1945. By the end of the war in Europe the FAA had grown to 3243 pilots and 1336 aircraft. This book sets all these varied actions within their proper naval context and both technical and tactical aspects are explained with 'thumb-nail' descriptions of aircraft, their weapons and avionics. Cross reference with the Fleet Air Arm Roll of Honour has been made for the first time to put names to those aircrew killed in action wherever possible as a mark of respect for their determination against enemy forces on, above and below the sea surface which more often than not outnumbered them. The Fleet Air Arm and the War in Europe completes David Hobbs’ much-praised six-volume series chronicling the operational history of British naval aviation from the earliest days to the present.

The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest and most complex campaign of WWII. Fairey Swordfish, launched from Escort carriers and MAC ships, played a huge part in winning that war. These wonderful aircraft, so well suited to the task, flew in all weathers and proved to be a superb deterrent to the German U boats, reducing allied ship losses to a minimum.

This limited edition print (250) shows Swordfish LS326 setting out on yet another cold patrol and has original signatures of veteran aircrew including those who flew in the Atlantic and one survivor of the Battle of Taranto.

MAC Ship Pilot – Stanley Brand

Swordfish pilot Sub Lt Stanley Brand joined 836 NAS and served on MAC ships Alexia and Empire MacColl. He is the author of Achtung! Swordfish! (and also pranged W5856 – another Swordfish in the Navy Wings Heritage flight!).

 MAC Ship Observer – John Treble

Lt John Treble served in 826 NAS operating from Malta and North Africa before joining 836 NAS and serving aboard MAC ships Acavus, Empire McAndrew and Empire Mackay.

 MAC Ship telegraphist air gunner – John McFarling

PO (Air) John McFarling served in 833 NAS and 836 NAS on the MAC Ships Miralda, MacAndrew and Rapana before moving o 758 NAS

 MAC Ship Air Staff Officer – John Neale

Lt Cdr John Neale was awarded his DSC for his part in the attack on Taranto in 1940 while flying with 815 NAS. He then served with 823 NAS on the Malta run with HMS Furious and then 841 NAS where he earned a DFC for operations in the Channel.

Artist – Terrence Lee

Terrence Lee is a highly regarded artist who specialises in marine subjects and worked for a period at RNAS Yeovilton

 MV Rapana.

Rapana was launched in April 1935 and was converted to Merchant Aircraft Carrier (MAC ship) in July 1943.

She displaced only 8000 tons (or 16,000 with a deep load). Almost 483 feet in length, she had a maximum beam of just 62 feet. She was equipped with a single 4inch QF (quick fire) gun, two single 40mm Bofors and six 20mm Oerlikons. She carried 3 Swordfish which were parked on deck as there was no hangar. She was reconverted to a mercantile tanker in 1945, renamed Rotula in 1950 and scrapped in Hong Kong in 1958.

Fairey Swordfish LS326

LS326 is one of the last two flying Fairey Swordfish aircraft in the world and is part of the Navy Wings Heritage Flight. Built by Blackburn in Sherburn in Elmet, she was delivered to the RN in 1943. She saw service in L Flight 836 NAS in MV Rapana between September and November 1943 and later in 836K Flight in MV Empire MacCallum during 1944. In 1959 she was used in the film ‘Sink the Bismarck!’.

The Lockheed F-35 is an advanced stealth fifth generation fighter combining speed and superb agility. There are three variants; F-35A, B and C. The F-35A CTOL (Conventional Take Off and Landing) and has four internal weapons stations in two weapons bays plus three optional external weapons stations. The F-35B STOVL (Short Take Off Vertical Landing) variant while the F-35C is a CV (Carrier Variant). F-35B Lightning II ZM149 “015” (c/n BK-15) piloted by Sqn Ldr Will of the RAF No 207 Squadron from RAF Marham completed the first successful landing onboard HMS Prince of Wales on June 8, 2021. This was the inaugural landing of a fixed-wing aircraft on the Prince of Wales. The Prince of Wales is the second Royal Navy aircraft carrier and was conducting sea trials commencing on June 7, 2021. ZM149 will take part in the sea acceptance trials by testing the vessel’s ability to launch and recover aircraft

Arriving November 14th, 2024

On May 1st, 1982, nine Sea Harriers from 800 Naval Air Squadron, attacked the airfield at Port Stanley. Then a Flight Lieutenant, David Morgan was the pilot of the last aircraft to attack and was forced to come in just above ground level to avoid the, by then fully alert, airfield defences.

Despite being hit by 20mm AA fire, he managed to escape by flying at less than 30 feet above the runway and returned safely to HMS Hermes.

Lt Cdr Morgan ended the conflict as the highest scoring pilot with four confirmed victories and was subsequently awarded the DSC.

This superb print by Darryl Legg captures the speed and danger of those moments as he completes his mission and hurtles along the runway to get clear of the danger zone.

Each print of the limited edition of 300 is individually signed by Lt Cdr David Morgan DSC.

As an operation, from the British perspective, the Channel Dash lacked any form of successful outcome. As an illustration of respect for duty and absolute courage in the face of insuperable odds, it stands as a beacon that would be hard to surpass. 

Eighteen men in six flimsy aircraft against three capital ships, numerous destroyers and E boats  all under a massive Luftwaffe umbrella. All six aircraft were shot down and only five aircrew survived.

This dramatic commemorative depiction by famed artist Philip West captures the moments after 825G has ditched and Observer Sub Lt Edgar Lee is helping his wounded pilot, Sub Lt Brian Rose, into their dinghy. Sadly, TAG Leading Airman Ambrose Johnson did not survive.
