Retired veteran pilot Lieutenant Commander John Dixon, supported by the manufacturer, Navy Wings and a cohort of other veterans, has undertaken a veritable crusade and, despite significant impediments along the way, Lt Cdr Dixon has succeeded in producing a superb range of Fleet Air Arm Wings. This has been a labour of love.
In John's own words...
'Chatting to a bunch of Fleet Air Arm veterans after a Remembrance Day parade three years ago, it was commented on that, unlike almost every military branch of any other service, we had no badge or emblem to proudly identify us as to who we were when dressed in civilian attire. Yes we could have worn the embroidered wings brooches we were issued with, but over the years there have been many subtle (and some not so subtle) differences in designs and sizes and it was thought they could be bettered.
Now, here on the Navy Wings Store website, is the result of deliberation with the MOD and over 400 members of the FAAOA and Aircrewman's Associations.
The Pilots, Observers and Aircrewman wings have been optimised for presentation and are sized to be worn on the left breast over full size and miniature medals.
I hope you like them and wear them with pride. You have earned them.'
Lt Cdr John Dixon.
All three sizes are MOD approved, finished in 9ct gold plate and secured by butterfly clasps. The miniature size is offered with an optional safety pin clasp, ideal as a 'sweetheart' brooch.
The detail and finishing is superb. Strong zinc alloy base with detailed enameling and 9ct gold and/or silver-nickel plating.
