Formed in 1941 with a complement of Fulmars, 809 NAS and was involved in actions on the Russian convoys and the Mediterranean and later, flying Seafires, such operations as Pedestal, Avalanche, Torch and Dragoon before being deployed to engage in the recovery of Rangoon and British Malaya and Sumatra.
After the war they transitioned to Sea Hornets and then Sea Venoms in time to be involved in the Suez Crisis.
Later they converted to Buccaneers (including for the British Honduras/Belize 'incident'). and then, ultimately, decommissioned in 1978. The Falklands War saw 809 briefly recommissioned to fly Sea Harriers to great effect. Decommissioned in December 1982, 809 is now, once again, an operational Naval Air Squadron flying the formidable F-35B.
