This is an extraordinarily rare opportunity to own a piece of real aviation history.
The Fairey Firefly is a WWII era fighter/reconnaissance aircraft, but was later developed into strike and anti-submarine roles.
Designed to the standard (at the time) FAA concept, the aircraft had a separate station for an Observer. The Firefly was superior in both performance and firepower to its predecessor, the Fairey Fulmar. Development was protracted so the Firefly only entered operational service towards the end of WWII, by which time it was no longer competitive as a fighter. The extra crew member made it a heavy airframe for a single engine, but it proved to be a fairly rugged and easy to fly aircraft with a very useful long range.
Post war, it was soon superseded in the fighter role by the arrival of jet aircraft and was consequently adapted to perform other roles, including strike operations and anti-submarine warfare. With these taskings it remained operational in the FAA until the mid-1950s including ground–attack operations from various aircraft carriers during the Korean War. It was also operated by the naval air arms of Australia, Canada, India and the Netherlands and was used by the Dutch in attacks against Indonesian infiltrators in Dutch New Guinea as late as 1962.
A very effective aircraft, much liked by its crews, that did a good job albeit out of the limelight.
