In 1958 HMS Bulwark was withdrawn from service as a fixed wing aircraft carrier, to begin in January 1959  her conversion into a helicopter and Commando Carrier. At the same time 42 Commando Royal Marines who were based in Bickleigh,  on the edge of Dartmoor just outside Plymouth was  designated as Britain’s first helicopter borne assault troops with its own landing craft squadron using HMS Bulwark as a mobile floating platform which could appear unseen off the coast anywhere in the world with both 848 Naval Helicopter Squadron and four landing craft which double the Commando’s ability to land troops both by sea and air.                                                                                                                            This book tells the story of the build up and the ships first commission in 1960 as a Commando Carrier, its journey out to its new base in Singapore, and how the three component's of a Commando Force  began a journey around the Far East ready to combat both military and civil strife as and when needed complete with dozens of photographs.
