It's 80 years since the 'Men of Taranto' made history. Their courageous, successful and innovatory attack on the Italian Fleet in Taranto harbour changed the balance of power in the Mediterranean in favour of the allies. This aided the war in North Africa and, in providing the Japanese with the blue print for their attack on Pearl Harbour, ultimately had an effect on the global course of the war. It also marked the beginning of the decline in significance of the capital ship and the ascendancy of the aircraft carrier.
