My Father, Nat Gold was a TAG in 830 Swordfish squadron based on Malta.

He was initially assigned to Illustrious but went down with food poisoning in Alexandria, so someone else went in his place. Dad missed out on being part of the raid on Taranto. Unfortunately the guy who took Dad's place was killed during the subsequent Luftwaffe attacks on Illustrious.

Dad arrived in Malta on the day Illustrious limped into port. From that day forth the Germans and Italians stepped up the their bombing of the island, which continued relentlessly for the whole of the time Dad was based there. Initially it was a 3 month posting but was extended to a year because of the shortage of experienced air crew.

From what my Dad told me and what I have read about his exploits attacking Axis convoys and raids on Tripoli Harbour, this book brings home vividly and accurately what the Stringbag crews had to face, time and again. Even the rivalry between the RAF and the FAA referred to in the book, played out on Malta too.

This is a wonderful book in a format that can easily be read and understood by younger generations. I intend to give this book to my Grandkids so they will have an understanding of what their Great Grandad endured during WWII.
